Match making
3 pillars
- Connection quality
- Match fairness (skill)
- Matchmaking speed
Skill
- Skill is evaluated by kills, deaths, captures, round wins, revives, dunks, etc.
- A difference of 200 skill usually means a 75% chance of winning engagements
- 400 skill around 90%
- 600 skill means you will win a 1v1
Problem Space
- Matches are typically outbalanced due to average skill level and new light vs veteran matchups
- Over 50% of Control matches have a disparity of 900 skill between the top and bottom (not good)
- Survival Freelance has 60% games with 250 disparity (good)
- Bigger disparities lead to higher chances of spawn traps and/or a team being all dead at once
Balancing
- Hard to do with skill outliers present
- Aim is to get that low disparity
Season 18
- Control is getting SBMM to fix this
- More changes to potentially come in S19
- Rest of playlists are sticking to either Connection BMM or SBMM
Types of Matching Making
- CBMM - find best connected players for small area, widen area if not enough players found (area is determined by one random player on each fireteam)
- SSBM - find best skill disparity of players in a connection strength based area, widen area if not enough players found
- Control will test a loose version of SSMB which prioritizes both skill and connection equally
Goals for matchmaking
- Minimize match found time to 2-4 minutes
- Keep mercy rates for all maps around 5%
- Have 80% of matches end at the score limit
- Have the kill differential between top and bottom be 10-20 kills
- S19 may also include added variable of fireteam size as a matchmaking feature
Trials Map Vote for August 2nd
- Eternity - 39%
- Widowâs Court - 31%
- Rusted Lands - 30%
